Sunu Mosaic

The sunu (offering) mosaic is available on the Vestibule Door in south direction of the inner narthex which is one of the most important mosaics of Hagia Sophia. This mosaics was uncovered in 1849 by Fossati brothers while they were completing the repairs on Hagia Sophia. The floor of the mosaic which has a symmetrical layout created from the gold gilded mosaics and abbreviated monograms of the words of METER and THEOU are available on the both sides of the head of Virgin Mary who is sitting on a throne and these abbreviations also mean she is the Mother of God.
